MNP, mobile number portability - nationwide launch

Tags: , ,

today, 15 October 2008 is a nationwide MNP lauch. for you who dont already know, it allows all mobile phone users to switch network without having to change their number, not even a digit of it. for example, you own 0123456789 and currently a Maxis customer, you can switch from Maxis to your preferred network, say, U-Mobile, which currently using 018. so when the change of network done, your are now a U-Mobile customer, and your mobile number is still 0123456789.

for some, they might ask, what’s the good of this? but for some, they have been waiting for this long time ago.. having this option, you have become more powerful, where telco company (currently Maxis, Celcom, DiGi, U-Mobile, Happy) will have no option but to prepare a very good deal for customers, to avoid their customer running away to other telco.

cost of switching network? well absolutely zero.

there are thousands of customers who long disappointed with service provided by their current network, but never change to other just because of the number. now with MNP, it’s the best time to proceed without loosing numbers, and look for better option. for those who look for better coverage and better rates, for sure will be happy for this!

I applaud the move to ‘deregulate’ the mobile phone number market - it has been quite a pain in the ass that each telco has their specific unique three digits for the start of each phone number. From an economist’s point of view, this can be said as a large degree of monopolistic control over the market as customers will be reluctant to switch to a better telco even when their current telcos are overcharging them or providing unsatisfactory customer service/support - and this is detrimental to the well-being of the customers.

By introducing mobile number portability scheme to the mobile number market, customers now have the right to choose between telcos which best suit their needs, without needing to worry about the hassle of switching numbers. This allows the market to reach a more efficient outcome as the telcos have to live up to the expectations of the customers, making them more efficient in the process :)

Throwing all the technical jargons aside, basically MNP will benefit both the telcos and the customers - telcos get to reduce their cost (to provide lower prices, making them more efficient) and customers get to enjoy lower prices and the freedom of switching ;)
